Security tips when using the Internet

Anti Virus Software

Some Anti Virus software is essential, even if you do not use the Internet except for Email. Viruses can arrive on your machine in several ways, whether from a Web site, or as an Email attachment.

A good rule is never to open an Email from someone that you do not know, or one that is not expected. Even your friends may accidentally send you a virus if their own machine is infected.

Install Anti Virus software and keep it up to date. New viruses are being found all the time, scanning with out of date virus definitions means that any new ones are likely to be missed.

There are several suppliers of AV Software, typically it can cost £35 to buy and a further £35 to renew your subscription for updates after 12 months. Alternatively, there are several free versions available, and these score fairly well in comparative reviews. One of the best known free ones is from AVG Technologies
